The MAXM Skate Knee Recovery Program is an innovative and unique solution to the global problem of stiff and sore knees after surgery and injury. It was developed by leading orthopaedic surgeon Dr Matthew Liptak more than 10 years ago to improve patient outcomes. The program is powered by the MAXM Skate device with integrated bluetooth sensor, typically 4-6 weeks long, and involves 3 daily exercises using the MAXM Skate to track your range of motion via the MAXM Skate App.
It is most commonly used for people recovering from knee surgery like total knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, arthroscopy and meniscus repair, as well as recovery from other knee injuries and trauma.
The program is evidence-based and our 2020 Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) showed significant improvements in post-operative outcomes such as range of motion compared to standard care.
If you’re looking for an example 12-week program to recover from a total knee replacement you can see this on our website here.
- How long is the program?
Most of our programs are 4-6 weeks long and this can be guided by your healthcare team.
You’ll start with 1-2 weeks of pre-surgery exercises to put your best foot forward for surgery and familiarise yourself with the MAXM Skate solution. Then, roll straight into your post-op recovery program.

Effective pain management to ensure you can maintain good range of motion and progression of your exercises is important.

Your MAXM Skate is designed for indoor use only. We recommend giving it a regular wipe down with a moist (not wet) cloth and/or disinfecting it with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
- How do I recharge the sensor?
If you notice a red blinking light on your sensor it means the battery is running low. You can easily recharge it with the included USB-C.
- How do I pair the sensor to my MAXM Skate app?
Make sure you have the app installed and mobile Bluetooth turned on. Then, turn on the sensor and simply open your MAXM App and the Bluetooth connection will occur automatically. You’ll notice the Bluetooth blue light on the sensor will go from blinking to a full blue light once it is paired.
- Should I still see a Physiotherapist?
Yes. MAXM Skate is an effective and innovative recovery program but not a replacement of your medical and allied health team. In fact, MAXM Skate love to partner with physios and medical teams and have seen globally how our solution can be an important part of a clinician’s toolkit to get the best patient outcomes.
We can provide training and support to local healthcare teams wanting to tap into the benefits of MAXM Skate – please contact us to find out more.
- How do I fix the app?
If there are any issues with the MAXM app, force quit and re-open. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try deleting and re-installing the app.
If you have ongoing issues contact our dedicated support team at [email protected]
- How does the sensor collect and store data?
The MAXM Skate sensor connects to your phone via a Bluetooth connection. This connection allows for the sensor data to be sent to your phone and the MAXM App then uses this data to associate it with you.
There is no recording or storage ability of data on the sensor – it is purely transmitting the data to your phone. For more details, see our Privacy Policy.
- How does MAXM Skate ensure the privacy and security of my data?
We keep your data safe, secure and encrypted with the global platform, Salesforce. For more details, see our Privacy Policy.
